Senior Women v Manurewa

After a week off with our scheduled game and training cancelled, the girls were eager to blow out the cobwebs with a good run against Manurewa at Te Puru on Sunday.

Having drawn 1-1-with them in the first round despite playing well, the team was keen to put together a complete performance and make another bid for the top of the division two table with a game in hand.

Although we started relatively strongly we were soon on the back foot after Manurewa took advantage of a miscommunication in defence to put one away against the run of play.

With plenty of time left, the girls didn't panic and regrouped to start stringing some good plays together. Shortly after, a through ball from Georgia at halfway found Jo up front who managed to knock it over the quickly advancing keeper who was well out of her 18-yard box. Both teams watched the ball trickle through the bog to stop just over the line and level the score.

From there the girls battled well as the Manurewa players were pushed off the ball time and time again as Beachlands-Maraetai asserted their dominance over the game.

Two goals from centre midfielder Steph gave Beachlands Maraetai a good buffer, heading into halftime 3-1 up.

After switching ends the standard of Beachlands' play went up a notch, with more passes finding feet and fewer balls going astray, which made for a more flowing game. Our defence was tested a few times but showed it was up to the task, winning the ball and building the attack from the back right through to the forwards.

After a steady stream of pressure, Manurewa's defence crumbled and some good passing through the middle put Jo through for two more goals to complete a hat-trick, and Steph hit a beautiful long-range left-footer to bring up her hat trick too.

Unfortunately the team conceded one more goal to make the final score 6-2, a result to be proud of and one which makes Beachlands Maraetai the team to beat for the rest of the league in the weeks to come.
