Senior Reserves Snare Late Win

Beachlands Maraetai AFF Div 7 side faced up against the old foes at High School Old Boys. Previous games against this team had always been hard fought and this game would be no different.

Early in the game HSOB used their height at set pieces to cause issues in defence, but the new back four team held tight to keep a clean sheet in the first half while the calming influence of skipper Mark Laidlaw and the return of Ross Murphy saw a shift in momentum towards the end of the first half. A number of opportunities were not capitalised on, but the team grew more confident, playing some dominant football on an unhelpful Te Puru pitch.

The second half saw HSOB try hard again to put pressure on the young back line of BMAFC with a lot of aerial balls for their strikers to run onto, but all attacks were dealt with effectively and Adam Matthews started to become more dominant in his 18 yard box. BMAFC put the hammer down mid way through the second half and team manager Justin Irvine pushed forward into the midfield to support the attacks, which eventually saw a ball played from Irvine to a lightning fast Shane Gardner, who buried a brilliant strike from an acute angle to give BMAFC the win.

Player of the day went to Ross Murphy with his tireless efforts in midfield, and it was a pleasure to have him back in the squad. Next week they will face top of the table Western Springs away, which should be a real test for the newly formed reserve side.
