Possession doesn’t deliver win: Reserves

The weekend saw Beachlands play the reverse fixture against HSOB at Papatoetoe High School. An official referee was booked in advance for the clash which was destined to be a hard fought affair, and right from the outset BMAFC played aggressively and skillfully to obtain and then hold long periods of possession.
Once again the Senior reserves fielded a skilled and experienced mid field that could have easily turned out for the 1st team, such was the quality. Short sharp passing between Chris Wood, Phil Cook, Eric Rozebook, Rex Bignell and Justin Irvine saw the midfield build possession and get quality ball into the strikers, Ben Whittingham and Mark Laidlaw. However the shots were fizzing wide and into the woodwork as a hapless HSOB defence struggled with the quality. However it was amongst the run of play that a long free kick was slipped over the defence and a forward rushing stand in keeper, Paul Startin.
BMAFC picked themselves up and resulted in great goal to equalize. The 2nd half continued to be a game of BMAFC being unable to secure a goal, with the last pass seeming to go astray when there was quality build up. HSOB latched onto another kick and hope from the back to finish from a tight angle to give them the win. It was hard to be disappointed after the team had dominated and played exactly as they were asked too. Player of the day went to Paul Startin for filling in as keeper at the last minute and doing a fantastic job.
This weekend BMAFC host top of the table Western Springs in a true litmus test for the Senior Reserves, and a measure of how they grown as a unit.
