10th Phoenix v Bay Olympic Typhoons
Monday, 20 June 2011 10:37
Venue: Te Puru
Phoenix First win ! Having rained all night the Phoenix parents prepared for a cold wet windy day on the side line, but the weather cleared and the sun shone on Te Puru and eventually on the phoenix :)
With 3 teams in the 10's a bit of player juggling has been required to make sure we all field a team. So this week Brogan was loaned to the Panthers and Fraser popped down from the wildcats to help us out. The game was very even in the first half with both teams competing fiercely for the ball and some good attacking runs from both teams had several good shots on goal, ours from Annie Fraser and Max, resulting in Fraser sneaking an outside of the foot shot through (yes through) the keeper for our first goal and a 1-1 score sheet at half time. A rock solid defensive unit of Finn, Cameron Blake and Danniele thworted many fine attacks by the typhoons and the feeding up field along the exposed flanks was... well, just like we practiced :). The mid field worked well as a unit and held field position nicely with many great runs down the side line from Kingsley, Annie and Baylin often finishing with great centering kicks across the front of goal. The attack of Fraser, Max, Annie and Baylin was relentless in the second half with many shots on goal, lots of corners and producing 2 fine goals, one each from Max and Baylin. So a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play, 10 minutes that seemed like half a day! as the typhoons rallied and launched some last minute attack resulting in a top quality solo goal from their very talented striker. But the phoenix hung tough and a very deserved win was recorded from a team thats come along way this year. Good work the phoenix... and so often unrecognised is the effort from the peripheral volunteers. Thanks to Simon and Kevin who have dropped into assist with practice from time to time and Kirk the official assistant coach who makes training that much more productive, good job. Oh and Karen thanks for applying your organising skill to the team and getting everyone to the game on time :) Cheers Coach
